Describe HammondMaintainanceAndTroublesh here. Recently given a Hammond Spinet (68). Turn it on. Hold the start lever and get a tube amp groaning sound from the speaker. Plays some percussion sounds on lower keyboard and pedals. How do I go about troubleshooting this instrument? Most likely failures would be? Tubes? Where can you test tubes these days?
Many thanks.
Chris Travis
Hi Chris.
First off, the proper start procedure is: start switch for ten seconds (or so), then run switch. See HowToStartAHammond. The first thing to do is to ascertain that the tone generator is running. If you really get some tones out of it (rather than clicks and pops) that would prove that the tone generator is running. Otherwise you might want to take the back off and look. (See also ToneGeneratorWontStart.)
Once the tone generator is spinning see HowToTestDriveAHammond.
(The fact that the speaker makes noise when you hit the start switch is probably a good sign that the amp (and tubes) is working well enough that they're not the reason you can't make musical noises with the organ.)
